Where is it?
Vision Australia’s Carols by Candlelight is held at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, which is located in King's Domain Gardens at 21 Linlithgow Avenue, Melbourne.
The Sidney Myer Music Bowl is easily accessible by trams, trains and buses. The Music Bowl is indicated with permanent directional signs to guide visitors. How do I get there?
Travelling By Train
Catch any train into Flinders Street Station, from there, walk south (away from the city) along St Kilda Road. This is approximately a ten-minute walk across Princess Bridge over the Yarra River into the Gardens. If disembarking at Richmond Station, walk east along Swan Street towards the Gardens. This is a fifteen-minute walk.
Stop 17 on St Kilda Road and Grant Street is the closest stop and all north and south bound trams running along St Kilda Road stop there. Be sure to catch trams travelling along St Kilda Road which are numbered 3, 5, 6, 8, 16, 64, 67 and 72 and disembark at Stop 17. The main gates of the Music Bowl are a three-minute walk from the stop.
Catch buses 216, 219 or 220 along St Kilda Road or Bus 605 along Swan Street. For more information about travelling to the venue by bus, visit the Public Transport Victoria website at www.ptv.vic.gov.au.
Street parking around the Sidney Myer Music Bowl (Linlithgow Avenue and St Kilda Road) is extremely limited. If driving into the city, patrons have the option of using the Arts Centre car park which is located at the rear of the Arts Centre. The entrance is located at the corner of Sturt and Kavanagh Streets, Southbank. This is a paid parking facility and is open 24hours. Please note it can fill very quickly on some nights.
Taxi and Uber
The closest taxi rank to the Bowl is outside Flinders Street Station, which is a 15 minute walk to the venue. You may also like to carry the number of a taxi company and call them as you are getting ready to leave the venue.
Taxi and Uber services can drop you off as close as possible to the venue, but please be advised that Linlithgow Avenue will be closed on 24 December 2017.
How can I volunteer?
Would you like to be part of the most popular Christmas event in Melbourne?
Vision Australia is looking for volunteers with a passion for fundraising to join the team that helps bring the light to Vision Australia’s Carols by Candlelight Christmas Eve at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, as well as The Rehearsal Night on 23 December. What should I bring?
In addition to Christmas cheer, patrons are encouraged to bring rugs, cushions, low backrests, picnics, sunhats and sun cream. Lawn chairs are permitted providing they are not more than 20cm off the ground. Collapsible prams are permitted but will need to be cloaked upon entry. Sealed or empty plastic water bottles up to 650mls can be brought in and free tap water is available inside the venue. There is no access to tap water in King's Domain so please bring ample to drink whilst you are queuing to get in. There will also be food vendors at rehearsal night and the main event. Patrons are encouraged to bring cash for any purchases on site or find out which ATMs that will be available for cash withdrawals on site.
What shouldn't I bring?
There are a number of items that patrons are not permitted to bring to the venue. These include and are not limited to:
- Elevated seating – higher than 20cm. A limited number of chairs will be available to hire at the time of ticket purchase.
- Alcohol (BYO not permitted, but wine and beer are available on site for purchase)
- Metal cutlery (plastic cutlery is permitted)
- Glass of any kind
- Drones or any other flying equipment
- Open soft drink containers
- Hard-sided eskies, coolers and hampers
- Video cameras, professional cameras or broadcasting devices
- Animals (except for registered assistance animals)
- Any item (or such quantities of an item) from which Management can reasonably infer that you intend to distribute, hawk, sell, offer, expose for sale or display for marketing or promotional purposes.
- Illicit substances
- Knives, weapons and dangerous objects of any kind which could impede safety or people’s enjoyment
- Firecrackers, flares, explosives
- Flammable liquids
- Lasers or laser pointers
- Umbrellas are discouraged and may be subject to restriction.
Please read Arts Centre about conditions of entry at time of purchase. Please note that these conditions of entry are subject to change up until 25 December. Also note, security will conduct entry checks and items which are not permitted will need to be disposed of or be kept in the cloak room and returned to patrons on exit.
Important: Please also note that any metal cutlery will need to be cloaked. Plastic cutlery will be available at the venue. Opened bottles will be confiscated. Flash photography and video-taping the show is not permitted. The use of cameras is permitted, however cameras of a professional standard will not be permitted. Any camera equipment deemed of a professional standard by event security will need to be held in the cloakroom for collection on exit.

What will happen if the weather is bad?
The show has never been cancelled in its 79 years and it will proceed even if it rains, so please watch the weather forecast and be prepared with a raincoat or poncho. During performances umbrellas must be kept closed as they spoil the view for other patrons.
In the unlikely event that the weather creates extremely hazardous conditions such as extreme flooding or potential fire danger, risk assessors at the event will determine the appropriate action.
Vision Australia also recommends that patrons bring along sunscreen and appropriate cover such as hats and long sleeve tops - particularly if arriving early.
What emergency services will be available?
Vision Australia's Carols by Candlelight® is serviced by:
- Acute Health Event Medical Team
- Victoria Police
- Security guards
These services are on standby to assist in the unlikely event of an emergency, and to assist all patrons if required.
When entering or leaving the venue we ask all patrons to follow all reasonable requests and directions from security and emergency personnel.
Security guards patrol the area inside and outside the venue, and work with the Arts Centre Melbourne, the City of Melbourne and Emergency Services personnel to ensure pathways are well lit and patrolled. There will also be directional signage to help patrons find their way quickly and safely to and from the venue.
Vision Australia strongly urges all individuals and families to take all the regular precautions, particularly in relation to the safety of children.
What should I do if I lose property at the event?
On the night there will be a lost property service. Please ask any event staff for assistance. If you discover, after the event, that you have mislaid items please contact the Arts Centre Security on 03 9281 8316 as they may be able to assist you.
Can I buy a DVD and CD of previous events?
Unfortunately, DVDs and CDs are not available to purchase.
